Research Topic:

Give a clear working title for your research project:

  • Do you know the background knowledge such as key literature, key people, key policies and research findings? (you may give a brief outline of the main conceptual areas, and the theoretical positions and lines of research within each which are relevant to your study)
  • What are the issues around the research area?

Statement of the problem

Give a clear statement of the problem using the answers to the following questions.

  • What is the topic of your study?
  • What is the rationale of your chosen topic? (The rationale refers to the reason or justification of your study. It states the need for conducting the said research).

The research objectives should not be TOO general!

An objective such as 'to study how to improve students’ learning skills?' would be too general. Instead, an objective such as: “to investigate the significant difference in learning gains between primary learners who have received instruction in growth mindset and those who received direct instructions” would be better. The latter would give the panel more specific ideas on what you intend to do in your research.

Research Methods

The research method refers to the systematic plan as to how you will conduct the study and it includes aspects such research design, setting, population sample and research instruments. You also need to think about the following aspects:

  • How will you conduct your research?
  • How will you design your project to get the best results/findings?

The process of second language learning is essential for students to grab a competitive edge in choosing a career. Thereby, the research topic is important as it is going to deal with the aspect that effective interactions in classrooms help children to develop keen interests for learning second languages. As mentioned by Van den Branden (2016), in the modern age, the rate of classroom interactions is decreasing, and the development of virtual classrooms are prominent. Hence, the research topic is interesting as it explores the traditional way of learning and teaching. It is relevant because, without effective interactions in a broad field face to face, children can never be able to develop their knowledge of the second language. The research topic is realistic as learning a second language is necessary to enter into a multicultural field in later life.  

Background knowledge related to the topic 

The second language learning process in classrooms has become an obsolete mode of learning today, but it is necessary for children to develop their skills and competencies in a broad area of education in future. In this respect, Hyland (2019) mentioned that learning a second language in a classroom environment is productive for children as they can be able to learn step by step in an interactive way. Thus, their cognitive development through L2 can be managed effectively. In different countries, different learning policies have been implemented to make a child able to use a second language. Hence, learning a second language by children faces challenges through virtual methods as there are fewer chances of face to face interactions (De Bot & Fang, 2017). Hence, the needs for conducting this research will be based on clearing the needs of traditional classrooms and explaining the reasons why classroom interactions are necessary for second language learning.  

Importance of this research 

The issue centres on the fact that reducing the importance of traditional classroom interaction is affecting students' efficiency to learn a second language in an efficient manner. This situation is considered as an issue because it is a decreasing chance to enter in a multicultural field of education by a student in future. The topic is important for the researcher as well as the field as it may help to resolve the challenges based on studying different academic papers in a second language. In the thoughts of Legault et al. (2019), until or unless parents of children will realize the needs of interactive sessions for learning a second language, cultural development of behaviour of a student can never be possible. 

In addition to this, the current gap is based on lack of information related to the methods of developing traditional interaction classrooms and its effects of making a student able to speak and communicate with a second language system. For example, it will help direct future researchers to discuss the topic in-depth as well as the teachers of different academic institutions to know about the modes of classroom interactions for second language learning. Indirectly, this study will help the parents of children to realize the effectiveness of second language learning through classroom sessions.

The purpose of this study is to understand whether interactive traditional classroom sessions are effective for beginners of children to learn the second language or not.

Research design 

Descriptive research design will be used because it will help the researcher to discuss the process of interactive classrooms in different countries and how they can be effective for managing second language learning. As mentioned by Saunders et al. (2017), the selection of appropriate research technique is helpful to validate the outcomes.  

Research setting 

Researchers will maintain consistency by considering a deductive research approach which will be helpful for analyzing the existing theories based on the concerned topic. Along with this, this research study will include positivism philosophy which may be helpful for the researcher to connect the research findings with the real world scenario based on classroom interactions for managing second language learning. In order to conduct this research, the theoretical setting will be developed by researchers. The secondary data collection process will be followed, and the perspectives of teaching environments in classrooms will be considered to analyze their effects on second language learning.

6. Significance of the research 

This research study will be helpful for opening a new window of knowledge regarding the needs of classroom interactions in this modern age for developing second language proficiency in children. In the views of Kung (2017), until or unless a child becomes habituated with the second language, he or she may feel barriers to be stable in a culturally different environment. This study will make a difference by highlighting classroom interaction system of different countries and their initiatives to develop the second language learning process.  

This research study will fill the gap by making a comparison between virtual and traditional classrooms. This, in turn, will be helpful to make the advantages of classroom interactions prominent for second language learning system of children.
