Answer

ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR AND PEOPLE

MANAGEMENT

Discussion 1

Types of power defined by Shenoy

1.Reward Power: Upon delegating the work and is successfully done, the managers take part in valuing the subordinate and appreciates with regards to the team members in a positive manner the good results. There is a specific requirement of this in the Parks Corporation where the company need to address the Gary works and provide him proper reward apart from just providing appraisal letter.

As opined by Saito & Ruhanen (2017), the limitation is that, if the value of the reward doesn’t meet the expectation, this type of power gets weakened

2. Referent Power: This kind of power is referred to as a role model being played by a manager. The power of the manager is based on his management skill and his ability of administration towards his subordinates. Gable could have performed like the significant manager and could have acted as a role model for his team.  However, there is a possibility of losing oneself as the responsibility is very high because of the high expectation of the subordinates.

How does a project manager use the power which will impact the project team to improve?

The project manager can identify the strengths and weaknesses of individual team members and delegate work accordingly in small targets. Gary could have involved in it by better participation in the communication. Post completing the work and meeting the targets, the manager can appreciate the team members along with rewards in front of the entire team member. As a result of this kind of power, compliments and promotions can also be rewarded to the team member.

What benefits can be gained from using more than one source of influence when leading a team?

The source of personal motivation by constant and continuous connectivity with team members will make them feel valued and Gary could have engaged in this to provide better assistance in leading the team.

Further, the personal ability can help and encourage the team member to challenge the team member himself which will, in turn, help the team member with the demand to learn and be skilled (Sourcesofinsight, 2020).

Difference between influence and manipulation with justification

Influence can come in different ways and forms. Individual influences can be used or a combination of it can also be used for stronger output.

Manipulation can also be done to achieve stronger goals but manipulation tactics used usually results in negative feelings. Manipulations are difficult to be done when dealing with reliable sources of information (Social-engineer 2020).

Response to colleagues

Response 1

For a viable team management capacity, it is necessary to have a proper power shared and composed by the leader in the team. The colleague has taken the legitimate power to show the proper effort that could be followed by the Lord industries. This is a helpful power as it suits the projectized organisation like lord industries. Gable needs to provide proper recognition to his team members in order to motivate them towards the completion of the shared goals of the organisation. Legitimate power is useful to reach the desired objective because the team is motivated when this particular approach is chosen. Thus, the overall response is that legitimate and reward power is effective for the successful project management capacity and this has been clearly shown in the discussion of colleagues.

Response 2

In the case of Gable, the colleague has suggested that the reward power in which Gable works needs to be appreciated. Gable has made the minutes and all the necessary reports for the customers. Providing reward and recognition could help him to feel motivated and further conflicts during hectic works could be avoided. However, he has not focused on the communication breakdown that occurred from Gary's side. Gary holds the major responsibility of managing the tasks of each team member like Gable, Paul Evans. Gary visits during the research work were less effective. Moreover, he has a major contribution to the team for which he has not got any pay increment but the only letter of the appraisal. Therefore, the colleagues' approach was significant for project management capacity.

Discussion 2

Advantages of the team comprising of global members:

Spending good time with the team members belonging from several cultures and religions can help in understanding the diversity and cultural gap. Understanding cross border people and their culture will help to create bonding amongst the team members and spending time will help in proper communication within the team by respecting each other (Hoch & Dulebohn, 2017).

How will complex projects be different with global team members?

In complex projects, knowledge transfer and communication are the most important factors that lead to its goal. Hence, apart from knowledge, the communication factor becomes another most vital attribute that contributes to the success of the project. For complex projects, the team needs to have a proper understanding of the diverse culture of each other with the improved communication medium.

Challenges of PM with global team members

A project manager has to equally and sensitively coordinate with all the team members as well as with the global members of the team. Time management is a challenge considering the difference in time zone as written and verbal communication is important. The challenge of communication gap of not sharing data and passing of information at the right time can also be fatal.

How can these challenges be taken care of?

The challenges can be met by timely and proper communication by the project manager. Use of proper flow of communication and with timely passing of information along with verbal communication methods between the project manager and the entire team can take care of many complex issues. Apart from the communication gap accountability and ownership along with time management are key factors (Shaban, 2016). As the functional head is responsible for any project he has to be in the loop of every communication as well as activities of the project. The progress of the project needs also to be well informed to the clients from time to time through verbal as well as documented communications.

Response to colleagues

Response 1

In this post of the colleague, there has been a positive scope shown for the geographically dispersed teams. It has been reflected that having the diversified team members could help to maintain the different requirements of the knowledge and skills. There are many advantages shown for the team who has diversified members. This helps to reduce the cost by following the team's effort in terms of particular skills. This also helps to ensure that the team has beneficial communication technologies. This is being the major requirement in order to make the team viable in reaching their goals on time. The result has been shown as a diversified team could provide support to the whole team.

Response 2

In this post, it has been shown that a diversified team could provide challenges in managing communication effectively. The reason has been shown as a diversified team from different locations could result in communication barriers mainly verbal communication. Communication is the backbone of the team which could help to provide all the success. However, in a diversified team, it becomes difficult to manage as the members belong to different ethnicities and the accent and language barriers could take place. Therefore, there is a significant linking with the geographically dispersed teams and challenges faced in it.
