POLICY BRIEF TO ADDRESS SOCIAL DETERMINANTS

Introduction 

The policy brief is considered as the issue that highlights some critical strategies for overcoming the issue. In this part of the discussion, the target population has been chosen as Australian adult Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who reside in Queensland in Australia. Two determinants are taken as economic as well as social status of that particular group of communities. 

Concise background 

Currently, it has been noticed that aboriginal individuals mainly the indigenous people in Australia are facing different social and economic constraints such as lower levels of education, homelessness along with the development of poverty and loss of job opportunities (Social determinants of Aboriginals, 2020). In this respect, two major social determinants that are social degradation and economic instabilities are affecting their health status in a negative manner. Thus, this issue needs to be addressed to maintain the health security of aboriginals in Queensland. 

Policy options and implications 

In order to implement policies, it must be focused to check whether those policies will be effective for developing health conditions by utilising concerning social determinants.  

Policy 1: Encouraging people’s awareness through campaigning regarding social equalities 

 Development of people's awareness based on social campaigning is helpful to secure the social status of aboriginal communities in Queensland. Besides, it can be a cost-effective way to support their health status, hence it will be a socially acceptable policy. As per the views of Martin & Tailor (2018), most of the aboriginal people are affected by racism in Australia. As a result of this, they are deprived of effective healthcare support in societies. As a result of this, it can be followed as an equitable policy as Canadian Government becomes able to support Maori people through enhancement of social awareness. 

Policy 2: Creation of equal job opportunities for aboriginals in different fields 

 It can be another effective way to support the health conditions of aboriginal individuals in Queensland. The Minister can create job opportunities for all aboriginals equally so that this policy can be widely acceptable and equitable. Though it may be a little bit expensive, it will provide economic support to the community people to have better healthcare support (Goodman et al., 2017). It has been observed that the Australian Government is strongly focused to provide employment opportunities to adult Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. 

Recommendations 

Among these two policies, the second one can be considered as most effective as it is both helpful in terms of managing social status and health conditions of aboriginal people in Queensland. Though it can be a little bit expensive, at the same time, it is true that economic insecurity is one of the prominent reasons for reducing the health condition of aboriginal people (LaDuke, 2017). As a result of this, the second policy will be the most appropriate option for the Minister. 

Conclusion 

Thus, it can be concluded that the social, as well as economic positions of aboriginal people, are the prominent determinants of their health status. In this regard, policy to develop economic stability through Government funding will critically help like the social acceptability of this policy is vast in comparison with the prior policy of developing public awareness.
