PROJECT MANAGEMENT: HEALTH, SAFETY, ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN RIO TINTO
The purpose of the report was to analysis the project and the HSEQ MS of Rio Tinto has been chosen. The objective that the project has followed was to analyse the project in several ways by which sets the scope for checking the viability of the project. this has been done by assessing the scope management, time management, risk management and other necessary areas of the project.
The chosen method for collecting data and analysing the project was secondary data collection methods. The research has been followed by searching the scholarly articles, peer reviewed websites to reach to a relevant decision for each assessment area of the project.
The most significant finding of the project is cost management, time management and scope management has been complied with all the criteria set in PMI and other management principles that need to be cover up in a project. the overall budget of the project has been found as £ 30,00,000 along with that there is consistency in the project.
The most important recommendation for the management of HSEQ MS of Rio Tinto project is to manage the integration of different departments. This is mainly required in the planning phase where the plans are not integrated with the execution and the project failed to maintain the integration management substantially. It is recommended to manage the integration with proper alignment with the planning activities and other processes that are necessary for carrying the project in planned manner.
This report is intended to analyse the project management of Rio Tinto. The discussed project is the health, environment, safety and quality management system. The main purpose of the project is generating an effective system to manage the health and safety for the worker and society, protect the environment and manage the quality so that it can create overall well-being of the society and environment.This report is associated to discuss the entire project in detailed. There are various risks associated with the report that has created difficultiesfor the learner. The main risk associated with the project is identifying the accurate set of information regarding the project because various secondary sources show different types of information. Another risk associated with the project is the time shortage that has created difficultiesin conducting the project.
The scope of the research is discussing project management of HSEQ MS of Rio Tinto more critically. For the report, information has been collected from different sources such as websites, journals along with newspaper articles. Mainly secondary research has been conducted here and then the secondary research data has been analysed and presented. Different segments of project management that are going to discuss here are the time management, scope management, cost management, quality management along with the risk management so that reader can develop a brief idea about project management. Management of scope is associated to ensure the fulfilment of project scope (Jetu and Riedl, (2012). For managing the scope, six different parts have been considered. The scopehas been defined effectively by fulfilling the requirement of stakeholders. The planning of HSEQ project has been done in every phase. For verifying the project, the project manager has formally accepted the project. For the development of WBS, the project manager has developed various major activity associated with the HSEQ project. Cost management is one of the crucial factors for maintaining efficiency of project activities. As mentioned by Kiviläet al., (2017), maintenance of project quality in a consistent manner is helpful for completing all activities within defined project costs. As a result of this, project activities can be finished within a limited range of budgets. It is an obvious fact that the project management team of Rio Tinto needs to consider their capabilities to set the cost of each activity. Maintenance of consistency in managing project cost needs to eliminate the chance of unnecessary cash flow, irrelevant delay in scheduling as well as lack of skills among project members regarding limited expenditure of resources. The initial cost for starting this project was £10,000. Further, it is the mid phase of the project, hence anticipation regarding cost expenditure can be helpful to overcome resources-based barriers. The given table introduces different cost management strategies and their impacts on project management of Rio Tinto.

In order to define the quality management hung et al., (2018), depicted that quality management ensures the maintenance of the standard of business or project and supervises all the activities as it maintains the desired standard. In the area of project management, quality management has great importance as it is necessary to maintain the standard quality in order to receive the appropriate outcome. Quality management method is preceded by 5 stages (see table 5). HSEQ project has maintained a high standard in all activities of the project. There was an efficient team in this project who had responsibility to ensure the high quality of the project. Apart from this, the project fulfilled all the criteria in order to maintain the high standards. The project manager of HSEQ project had vast responsibility in this area. The objectives of the quality management team of this project was the continuous improvement by maintaining the high quality.

Thus, it can be mentioned that risk management is one of the crucial factors to maintain project efficiency. As mentioned by Hopkin (2018), without effective strategies of risk management a project process can never get success. In this respect, the project manager of HESQ project remained focused to maintain proper cost and time plan to complete project tasks in a smooth manner. involvement of critical project risks reduces project efficiency and accuses delay to meet its objectives. Thus, it can be mentioned that strategic risk management helps the project team of this project to enhance its outcomes prominently.

The procurement policy of HSEQ project ensures that RIO TINTO follows all the purchasing requirements (Iron Ore, 2020). The project team has ensured that the requirements of the business can be fulfilled when goods or services are procured. Verification process of the suppliers has been generated also before selecting them and verification of the goods are generated as well in order to find out whether it meets requirements or not.

In the view of Gleeson, (2018), integration management can be described as the coordination process among the collection of project activities that are required to maintain the execution of the project properly. In vast project work, integration management isadopted widely as it is very beneficial to maintain the coordination between a number of project activities.
In the HSEQ project, there was no proper integration management plan which is a lacking area of this project. A vast project like HSEQ, there is always a number of project activities. The coordination among the project activities has been maintained by the project team members and supervised by the project manager as there was no proper team to maintain the integration of project activities.
The chosen project for this paper was HSEQ project to analyse the project management critically. From this discussion it has been measured that in project management there is a number of areas like cost, time, scope, integration, procurement and so on. All the areas of the HSEQ project have been discussed in detail in this project in order to fulfilled the purpose of this report. From the overall analyses of HSEQ project, it has been discovered few managerial areas of this project have fulfilled all the needed criteria of project management. On the other hand, there are very few areas that have a deficiency of fulfilling project management criteria.
From this discussion, the major significant outcome that has been discovered is that in project management, the role of a project manager is vast. Therefore, in order to lead a project successfully, the project manager needs to be efficient in his area (Haughey, 2018). Apart from this, the major strength of project management practice, if the planning of the project activities is proper and their implementation is appropriate then, it can lead the project towards success. However, an efficient project manager as well as team members can ruin a project which is a weakness of project management practices.
Despite HSEQ project has fulfilled all the criteria of project management, still there are few deficiencies that need to be developed in order to lead this project for future development. For this purpose, in the below, few recommendations are provided to improve this project more and action plan mentioned as well:
