Answer

Introduction

In public health, self-assessment is a major component of (Watson, 2019). Negotiation and mediation are powerful tools which help in resolving conflicts in the business world and legal matters (Jang et al., 2018). Negotiation and mediation skills are used to analyze important issues with different viewpoints. The approach is incorporated to reach some definitive solution which is acceptable and can be adopted mutually. The process of negotiation and mediation are broadly divided into three phases (Leigh-Hunt, 2016)

Use of Negotiation and Mediation Skill in given Rebuttal

In the given blog titled “The Role of Prescription Opioids in Opioid Overdose Epidemic “, I have discussed a crucial issue of prescribed opioids. The rebuttal is well analyzed with negotiation and mediation skills. I have tried to establish the case and have then presented both aspects of the story. Lastly, the blog also suggests a solution to the problem. In this write-up, I would discuss three phases of negotiation used in this blog with a rebuttal.

Preparing and Exchanging Information

Firstly, in the blog, relevant information regarding the opioids overdose and its prescription is mentioned by substantiating with available facts and data. It clearly states that Opioids are used to relieve pain after injury or surgery. The blog depicts the information regarding the death of people from 1999 to 2018, in the United States from the drug overdose and specifically with opioids (WHO, 2020). It also mentions other additional information regarding the first, second and third wave of this epidemic. The other aspect is also well stated and signifies that prescribed opioid is not the cause of overdose and deaths.

I have used relevant sources of information like the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institute on drug abuse, The American Journal of Medical Association, National Survey on Drug Use and Health, and the Texas A&M College of Pharmacy report to substantiate its facts.

I have tried to give relevant information of both the sides thus abiding by the negotiation and mediation skills (Jang et al., 2018)

Bargaining and Problem Solving

After establishing both aspects, I have tried to cover other essential points to reach for a middle way to resolve the problem. After researching both aspects, I noticed some important aspects that can help to mediate the issue:

  • Healthcare professionals have become more cautious in prescribing opioids since 2012 and are not prescribing opioids to the patients who are in severe pain (Fleming, 2018).
  • Variability in the use of opioids at the country level.
  • Healthcare professionals, an organization like Medicaid and Regulatory bodies like FDA, have played a role in the increased usage of opioids (Fleming, 2018).
  • Various guidelines like 2016 CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain, Prescription Drug Monitoring Program and Addiction treatment programs can help drastically.

Thus, the blog uses this aspect of negotiation and mediation skill and considers other aspects to suggest a solution to the problem (Watson, 2019).

Conclusion

Hence, I have concluded that the overdose of opioids is not only due to prescribed opioids. There are several other aspects like the role of medical professionals, training and support programs (Martin et al., 2016). Governments and healthcare professional should work synchronously to get a conclusive decision which is in benefit of humanity and society (WHO, 2020).
