Task Summary

This assessment task requires you to reflect on your experiences in MIS500 this trimester by following a four-step process to gain insights into the work you have done and how it relates to your own career and life more broadly. In doing so, you will need to produce a weekly journal to record your learning and then as the trimester comes to a close reflect on these experiences and submit a final reflection of 1500 words (+/- 10%) that will include the weekly journal as an appendices.

Context

This is an individual assignment that tracks your growth as a student of Information Systems over the trimester. It is scaffolded around your weekly learning activities. Completing the activities and seeking input from your peers and the learning facilitator is essential for you to achieve a positive result in this subject. Before you start this assessment, be sure that you have completed the learning activities in all of the modules. This reflective report gives you the opportunity to communicate your understanding of how information systems relate to your career and future.

Task Instructions

  1. During Module 1  5, you were ask to produce a weekly journal to record your learnings each week. Based on these weekly journals, please write a 1500 word reflective report about your experience.
  2. You are required to follow the four steps of Kolb’s learning cycle when writing the reflective report.

You will keep a learning journal throughout the trimester. Each week as you complete the learning activities you record your experience in spreadsheet or word document.

A suggested format for the learning journal is as follows:

DateLearning ActivityImpact (what it means to you)
Evidence (attach record of activity). This might be a set of slides, word document or pictures of work you
have completed in class

For each day in your learning journey, write the date and then the learning activity you engaged in. Detail what impact the learning had on you and then include any evidence you might like to keep for use later on. This journal should be appended to this assessment when you submit it.Kolb’s learning cycle

Step 1

Concrete experience  Keep a learning journal

The first step is to keep a learning journal for the trimester (Modules 1.1 through to 5.2 as described above. You should have already completed this step by now.

Step 2

Reflective observation  Summarise what happened

You should now be able to comment on your experiences this trimester. This exercise is not a list of what you have done but rather an observation of what you have learned  were there any themes that arose from your journal? The point of a learning journal is to start a discussion on what the key concepts and skills you have learned and acquired during the course of this subject. This is because we often don’t stop to think and reflect on what we have learned

Step 3

Abstract conceptualization  Analyse what this means

The next step is to analyse what you have found. Reflective practice is a process of thinking about new experiences with a view of learning. It is a form of personal response to new experiences, situations, events or information. What new knowledge have you gained in response to this exercise? And what does this information mean? You are expected to reflect at a deep level here. This means that it is not just about explaining what you have done in this subject rather it requires you to think about your personal beliefs, your background and the way you perceive the world around you. Did you learn anything in this subject that challenged you or change the way you thought about information systems or business?

Step 4

Active experimentation - New action

The final step is to discuss what you plan to do with this new knowledge. These new insights may lead to a change of thinking or behaviour. In what ways? Set yourself some specific goals for your future studies or career.

  1. You are required to write this assessment in a report format using the following headings:
  2. Introduction
  3. Reflective Observation
  4. Abstract conceptualization
  5. Active experimentation
  6. Conclusion
  7. Appendix of learning journal (with evidence)

Please note that simply describing what you have done each week will not be sufficient to pass this assessment. You are expected to go ‘deeper’ and analyse what this subject meant to you and your future.

Answer

Introduction:

This reflective writing is intended to show my potential to learn from the selected module. I had 5 different modules from which I had to learn the important information system implementation in a business. For the demonstration of the learning experience, I have used Kolb reflective cycle so that I can logically express my experience. Kolb reflective cycle is one of the four-stage cycles that is concerned with the internal cognitive process of learner (Tomkins & Ulus, 2016). Four different parts are there in the Kolb learning cycle that is shown below:

Reflective observation:

This stage offers a reflective observation of the new experience (Botelho et al. 2016). The first module offers a better overview of the information system concept. This module offers an effective overview of the business intelligence system. This module shows that a business must perform a different function to be operated. The information system must be applicable in this business function so that the efficiencies of every functional area can be improved. From this vast knowledge, I have gained knowledge about the information system that can be helpful for a business to secure a competitive advantage.

The second module has helped me in learning the fact that information system and technology is the source of competitive advantage. I have learned strategic competitive advantage's principle and the importance of data from this module. Moreover, I have learned the importance of knowledge management in the contemporary organisation. This module has helped me with the function of knowledge management (store, share, and organise). I have learned that KMS helps a business in accessing business-related data which helps them in improving the abilities to make a decision.

ERP and CRM are one of the brief concepts that I have learned from the third module. According to Hassan et al. (2015), a business can improve communication with the customers with the help of CRM. I have also learned how the decision-making capability of a business organisation can be improved through ERP. ERP optimises system through database management and resource tracking which improves IS’s efficiencies (Costa et al. 2016). Moreover, I have also learned about business intelligence. I have learned that business intelligence access historical as well as present data that is helpful for business in making a business decision. I have learned how BI can achieve the business goal by allocating resources.

Module 4 has helped me in gaining knowledge about enterprise architecture. I have learned that enterprise architecture helps organise and standardise the IS for aligning the goal of the business. I have also learned how IS can be applied in an organisation. I have identified the fact that cloud-based solution can help an organisation in storing their large quantity of sensitive data. this knowledge has helped me to understand the fact that cloud-based solution offers the opportunity to the business owner in accessing sensitive business data from any time and anywhere basis so that they can take a necessary business-related decision. I have learned that the function of a cloud-based solution is helpful for a business in improving the efficiencies of business function.

I have learned about the information privacy and security from module 5. it has been learned by me that several intruders are busy in accessing the sensitive information of an organisation and harm them financially. for resolving this issue, it is necessary for applying security in protecting the interest of an organisation. I have also learned about the action that must be taken by an organisation that can mitigate as well as manage risks. I have learned that moral dilemma can be generated in an organisation if an organisation does not follow legal and privacy policy. Therefore, it is important in following ethical and legal policy to maintain business effectively.

Abstract conceptualisation:

This stage creates a new idea or modifies an existing concept. This stage is the process to think about a new experience for facilitating learning (Kamis & Khan, 2019). The first module has helped me to understand the importance of business intelligence system for business. Previously I had very limited knowledge about the information system but after reading the module I have gained a brief overview of the application of IS in the different functional area of business. I have gained a new knowledge which is about agile practice.

Module 2 is helpful to gain knowledge about the KMS. I have learned that in every business, data management is important. This is because business data helps businesses in identifying the need of customers so that they can take a necessary decision in satisfying the need of the customers. Therefore, I think that the data economy is one of the crucial parts of the business that helps business to secure competitive advantage.  This is the chapter where I have learned the knowledge about the big data which is one of the new knowledge to me. I have learned that every organisation have to handle and analyse a large set of data so that they can reveal the pattern, association and trends to make an organisational decision. I have also learned new knowledge about the information system of the business.

Module 3 helps understand the importance of ERP and CRM in business which is one of the new concepts. ERP automating the business function as well as managing the process of business (Shen, Chen & Wang, 2016). I have learned that it offers real-time data. It has been learned by me that CRM increases loyalty among customers by forming a better relationship. I have learned a new concept from module 3 which is regarding business intelligence. I have observed that BI makes data into useful information. Raw business data do not help business in making a decision but BI improves the visibility of the core component of business and makes data more useful that improves decision making.

The new knowledge that I have gained from module 4 is how IS can be implemented in an organisation. The new thing that I have learned here is the implementation process of enterprise architecture. Previously, I have the idea that enterprise architect implements the enterprise architecture because I have learned that for implementing enterprise architecture, enterprise architect has a clear understanding of the strategy of the organisation. After reading the module, I have learned that collaboration among the project manager and enterprise architect is important in implementing the architecture. Moreover, I have also learned the utilisation of the cloud solution. I have learned how a team member of an organisation can use this solution to access the data when they require it.

I have learned to review the agile from 5th module which is a new concept for me. I have learnt a new thing from this module which is several tools in examining the moral dilemmas. 5th module has helped me in understanding a new fact which is the level of importance of organisational security. Another new thing that I have learned from the 5th module is privacy and ethics. I have learned that there is a certain ethical policy that every user of the information system need to maintain to avoid legal issues and issues regarding the intruder attack. I have also learned about various security mechanisms that offer protection from security threats.

Active experimentation:

In this step, the learner can develop a plan to apply their idea around them (Morris, 2019). 1st module helps understand the business intelligence system which is effective for me in applying this concept in my business so that I can take business decision more effectively. Business intelligence can help me in accessing business data so that I can use those data in developing a business decision to run business operate more effectively.

I have learned about the CRM and ERP from the third module which I can apply in my business to increase efficiencies. CRM system can help me in collecting, storing and segmenting data about customer behaviour which can help me in developing a strategy to improve the experience of the customers (Nyadzayo & Khajehzadeh, 2016). By applying ERP in my business I can improve my workflow. ERP system helps gain deeper insight about my company, achieving effective visibility of the supply chain, increasing the productivity, reducing the overheads of administration through automation and reducing the product’s costs by tracking materials (Sutduean et al. 2019).

From the module 4, I have learnt about cloud computing which can be applied in the future organisation. Cloud computing can help me in storing data and accessing it from any location. Along with that, cloud computing can offer a scalable resource of computing to the business which can help my business in saving costs. cloud computing offers me the opportunity in using the private cloud which can offer the best procedures and standards in saving the data of the client.

I have successfully learned about privacy and security mechanisms. I have learnt that computer security and privacy mechanisms help improve the overall health of the IS by preventing it from the malware and viruses so that the system can be run smoothly and quickly. For developing and maintaining sustainability in business, I have decided to apply the privacy and security mechanism in my future business.

Conclusion:

From the above discussion, I can say that the reflective cycle helps gain better knowledge about the module. This learning is helpful for me in understanding the importance of IS in business. Four different parts of Kolb reflective cycle is helpful for me in learning 5 different modules efficiently. Application of the Kolb cycle is effective for me in understanding the fact that how I can apply the modules in my future business so that I can gain more advantages.
