Domestic Violence in Australia

Reading 1

Domestic violence is quite common in today's society, and every government has developed specific laws to protect the victim. According to several Australia surveys, domestic abuse runs in every second family, and it is not always sure that the females are convict. But in some cases, males become victims. Primarily, there are three different beliefs in connection to domestic violence against women in a developed country like Australia.

  • Some people believe that men in society often spread physical violence.
  • Men being physically stronger than women who could hurt seriously.
  • The behaviour of violence is hereditary in the family.

The recent example of domestic violence is witnessed in Victoria, where the government is supporting the citizens to come out and seek help. Various surveys were conducted nationwide to examine all these aspects of beliefs. There are three different types of database on which account domestic violence is studied. The first one is by investigating the criminal record of the family. The second one is of examining husband, wife, or lover is conspiring murder of each other. The third one is a data of clinical studies of the injuries inflicted on the Australian women to ascertain that those are the result of domestic violence. However, some specific laws and penalties work for the removal of such domestic abuse and trend. (Hulme,  Morgan and Boxall, 2019).

Reading 2

According to the second report, domestic abuse with women is still more than men. The reason is violent men inflict more pain to the female partners than vice versa. As per the news of the June this year, Bryan Cranston mourns the death of her sister, being physically assaulted by her husband. And the study also believes the women's violence against men is the way of self-defence. In the year 2014- 2016, there are several domestic abuse cases witnessed in different regions of Australia. Victoria had 74,385 points of family incidents. Tasmania had around 4410 cases of family violence recorded. Several programs like partnership Against Domestic Violence are incorporated to protect the interest of victims in domestic violence cases. The program aims to provide the emergency crisis financial help to the women who are victims of domestic harassment. The program also aims at providing accommodation facilities to women that escape the domestic threat. The Australian government has started different projects at the regional and national levels that involve worker training, community awareness, and a systematic justice system to reduce domestic violence cases in the country. (Morgan et al. 2020).

Reading 3

The third reading limelight the fact that most of the couples undergo violence. More than 50% of the team, when surveyed, provided the information that they are assaulted, and they did the same to their partners at some point in time. The Australian government has refocused policies on the domestic violence issue, keeping in mind the gender-based problem that is coming up. Another case is of the Sydney doctor, where the female dentist was murdered by ex-partner, due to the domestic issues between them.  The government is also working hard to remove social inequality, supporting women in the subordinate position. This definitely will find a solution to domestic violence. The policies developed a focus on providing equal rights to women and changing people's cultural attitudes. The laws have set that take strict actions and penalize the convict in case of domestic violence. Specific other schemes like Domestic Violence Disclosure Schemes (DVDS) allow the victim to seek any evidence against his/ her partner In case of domestic violence. This will further help the government to enforce punishment against the accused partner. Such schemes and policies help in reducing the instances of domestic assault, especially against women.

 (Harper et al. 2020).

Reading 4

According to reading 4, specific surveys show that domestic violence is intergenerational. That means individual families inherit this attitude towards their partners. Women who have witnessed the domestic assault at her parental home, often tolerate the same against her. Such women fail to come up and fight against it in public. This is the main reason that the situation is still prevailing and doesn't seams ending. Domestic assault is prevalent for both men and women. The difference is the ratio of women than men is somewhat more. Here is another case of the public figure Ryan Phelan, who was reportedly alleged for domestic violence The Australian government has made norms to protect the victim's interest, whether it is male or female. Measures are enforced to punish the offender. Proper medical attention is provided to the victim, whether it is male or female. In a survey, the Australian government got an estimate of almost 2.1 million children to witness the domestic abuse with their mothers by her partner, and the vice versa is 8,20,000. The figured are high, and the Australian government is working out various schemes and surveys that encourage such people to reach out for help. 1 in 6 Australian women are at risk, and the numbers are different for men. Out of 16, 1 man is at risk of domestic violence. The numbers show the reality, and the government is working to reduce the numbers for women as well. (Kuskoff, and Parsell, 2020).

Summary

Domestic violence is a complex behaviour that may include physical assault, sexual abuse, or emotional torture. The victims of domestic violence are women as compared to men. Hospitals witness some such cases that deal with such hidden domestic problems. The situation needs to be identified by the medical practitioner and dealt with due care. Children, too, are part of the domestic threats; therefore, immediate actions need to be taken. The National Plan (2010- 2022) is set up to prevent violence against women and children. This plan lays down a particular guideline for the Australian government to control women's and children's rights concerning domestic abuse. The Department of Social Service DSS is responsible for Australian government actions concerning reducing domestic violence against women and children. January 2019 saw the new laws that target domestic violence perpetrators, which include strict penalties for the offender. The laws developed in Australia for domestic violence give a clear definition of rape, child abuse, and other sexual offences. It also includes judicial warnings concerning the crime. The same has special protection clause for the witness in the case and recording the evidence available. Thus, the Australian government is making all efforts to prevent domestic assault cases and work for women's rights. (Rees, 2020).
