CHILDREN’S SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIOURAL NEEDS

INTRODUCTION

In the report, an insight into children's social, emotional, and behavioral needs undertaken aged between 0-5 years. Furthermore, a report is accompanied by relevant perspectives and communication strategies concerning the given concept. In addition to this, challenges and opportunities regarding the implementation of plans concerning subject matter specified. Additionally, the current theoretical standpoint concerning children's aged between 0-5 wellbeing in terms of social, emotional, and cognitive development. Lastly, relevant recommendations were given in support and completion of the subject matter.

THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVE-

The initial years of life are a period of commendable growth in all areas of a child's social, emotional, and cognitive development. Moreover, social and emotional growth involves experience, emotional management, and proficiency to initiate positive and welcoming relations with other people. Additionally, children want a safe, nurturing, positive, loving, and flexible environment so that they can feel at home hence, it's the responsibility of caregivers to ensure protected and nurturing conditions so that children don't feel uncomfortable or uneasy. However, period prior-birth till five years is a period of fast growth in children's therefore, emotional support, positive conditions, understanding behavior by family members, and educator’s assists in a child's wellbeing.

Piaget’s theory states that education involving curriculum, directions, and materials and nurturing environment leads to the fulfillment of the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of children.

Theory of mind in context with child states a very important fact that infants are mindful of basic idiosyncrasy like positive or negative feelings concerning things surrounded or what people spectate is an indicator of what they focus on hence, from infancy till the age of five theory of mind pervades social communications regularly- child's learning, observations, responsiveness for surroundings and people which in total impacts children's wellbeing (Britto, et al. 2017).

Christian perspective of child needs and development states that they require discipline hence, parents who genuinely love their children will discipline them which is what God does with its angels/humans. Hence, they must be treated politely and positively (Abdulahi, Shab-Bidar, Rezaei, & Djafarian, 2017)

Social needs- In context with child development, the children want a protected, attentive, and understandable environment so that they can get a sense of comfort and relaxation. During infancy, an infant develops relations with their caregivers hence, small gestures and consistent interactions can do miracles and make him/her socially capable. Moreover, it's observed that infants and children who get deprived of affection and love fail to develop socially as well as emotionally. Hence, caregivers must put all their heart when it comes to childcare. According to Federal law, a child with disabilities has an equal right to enjoy childhood and get an education. Hence, parents must support and look after them constantly so that they can feel equal and comfortable. Example- play dough activity is best for all children especially for disabled ones.

Emotional needs- Children aged between 0-5 strive for importance, security, acceptance, and constant love from their parents/educators. Moreover, it can be argued that less importance and more ignorance when they want to be heard makes them emotionally weak. Moreover, at such ages, children establish emotional relations with their parents hence, constant emotional support and assistance will nurture them emotionally (Richter, et al. 2017).

Behavioral needs- Infants and children might show distinctive behavior at different point of time such as aggressive behavior, low self-esteem, breaking familiar norms, sedentary and arguable behavior hence, cooperation and patience is the key for a parent to deal and understand them so that they can grow well. Additionally, activeness, involvement, motivation, consistent support, and regular communication will shape up their behavior positively. Although, it can be argued that child rigid behavior needs to be controlled, or else they will end up being arrogant and aggressive.

POSITIVE LEARNABLE ENVIRONMENT PLAN-

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Source: - Child development, (2020)

Below are some of the plan to develop a positive learning environment concerning child development

Nurturing environment- It’s the responsibility of parents/caregivers to provide an environment that is safe, comfortable, motivating, and welcoming for their children which will assist them in discovering themselves and learning through interactions with other children as well as parents/educators. In addition to this, it will enhance their motor, communication, cognitive, social, and problem-solving skills. Hence, it can be said that such an environment adds to their wellbeing.

Welcoming environment- regular and consistent interactions with them by parents and caregivers create long-lasting contagion effects on child wellbeing. Moreover, safe, creative, and positive space provided to children will enhance their creative and social skills hence, teachers must ensure that a comfortable and understandable environment exists.

Creative activities- Activities that involves both parent-child engagements will boost up their creative, cognitive, and problem-solving skills. Moreover, the creation of beautiful, child's interest space will attract and motivate him, hence, such space should be provided which will add to his creativity and learning enhancement. On the other hand, interpersonal and emotional learning foster a child's cognitive and social skills hence, parents must involve in their routine activities, encourage and support them in every situation so that they can feel secured and develop physically and mentally.

Scaffolding approach- It emphasizes on encouraging a child's creativity and innovation rather than breaking or ignoring it (Webster-Stratton, & Reid, 2018).  Therefore, as there exists diverged needs of distinctive children in way of having different social needs- safety, interaction, and positive environment, emotional need- consistent support, understanding behavior and motivation from caregivers/parents, behavioral needs- constant love, support, acceptance by parents and ECE. Hence, such diverged needs are common for every child and infant as all of them strive for love, trust, and support. Therefore, providing at home, comfortable, supportive, less-conflicting, positive, and nurturing environment will shape up their cognitive, social, and emotional wellbeing.

Creative activities involving parental participation- Activities such as play dough, painting, and craft activities involving parents-children participation will enhance children's creative, learning, and cognitive skills. Therefore, parents and ECE must provide them with such activities that could shape up their wellbeing hence, such activities possess the utmost importance in terms of a child's wellbeing (Adamson, 2018).

Interactive activities- Activities involving both indoor and outdoor games provided safe space will increase their social and cognitive skills. Hence, parents/caregivers must design such activities that welcome a child's wellbeing (Vukelich, et al. 2019). For instance- painting, running, and other activities, performed together hanging their artworks will boost up their social and physical development. Therefore, it can be said that such activities play an important role in child development.

Infant development environment- In the case of infant till age 5 children are well aware of small gestures and activities such as- peek-a-boo and eye-contacts including rhymes. Therefore, constant love, support, and care will enhance their emotional and behavioral development. Moreover, under such age children establish pure relations with their ECE and parents by being with them all the time, communicating with them both verbally and non-verbally thus, family acts as a catalyst for children to grow socially, mentally, and physically (Momsen, 2019).

ANALYSIS OF PLAN

CHALLENGES-

It may be a challenging task for teachers concerning the implementation of plans and activities reasons being diverged needs of several children. Hence, introspecting, understanding, and implementation becomes a costly affair in terms of time and effort. Moreover, children rigid and disobeying behavior is another factor which can trouble teachers, educators as handling them can be a bit difficult.  Additionally, the lack of required resources, teaching materials, or language distinctiveness by diverged children creates a big barrier for teachers (Garbarino, 2017). Although, the theoretical perspective by Christians which suggests that discipline and calmness is key to nurture behavioral needs of children hence, it should be hold into account by teachers.

OPPORTUNITIES-

Opportunities can knock the door for the teachers in terms of metacognitive skills enhancement through planning, introspection, and management. Moreover, it will enhance cognitive and problem-solving skills of respective teachers involved throughout the plan hence, it can be said that a wide number of opportunities available including the establishment of social relations and understanding diverged cultures/behaviors of children and their parents. Furthermore, applying Piaget’s theory and Christian perspectives will assist in effective plan formulation.

IMPLICATIONS-

It can have a profound impact on a teacher's current learning and knowledge as robust planning and management will enhance their skills. Moreover, professional development depends on perceived behavior or gained knowledge while implementing the plan. Hence, it can be said that it allows teachers to share knowledge and learning thereby leading to effective teaching. Moreover, Piaget's theory concerning states that education involving curriculum, directions, and materials and nurturing environment leads to the fulfillment of the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of children. (Dawson, & Guare, 2018).

PERSONAL TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I believe that learning goes beyond classrooms and includes outdoor activities that nurture a child’s wellbeing socially and emotionally. Moreover, I strongly believe that children must be treated equally, politely, and provided with a nurturing environment irrespective of cultural differences hence, there should be no room for inequality concerning child education. Moreover, Christian perspective of child needs and development which states that they require discipline hence, parents who genuinely love their children will discipline them which is what God does with its angels/humans. Hence, this theoretical perspective and Piaget’s theory is one of main teaching philosophy for me which I guide in real life to every child and people I met in my life.

Hence, children must be treated with love and politeness is what I believe in.

CONCLUSION

It can be concluded that early child growth is dependent upon the environment and people he/she is surrounded with hence, nurturing, a comfortable and protected environment must be provided so that children don't feel insecure or uncomfortable. Moreover, family involvement plays an immense role in a child's wellbeing and fulfillment in terms of social, cognitive, and behavioral needs. Therefore, active participation, constant love, interaction, and emotional support assists them in discovering themselves, maintaining high self-esteem, and building trust in others.
