The scenario created for this task is as follows:

You are a team of student interns at a large, private organisation. As part of an internship project, your supervisor wishes to provide you with an organisational problem that needs solving, however you must first demonstrate how you will be an effective team.

As part of the internship orientation, your boss has given you a team building assignment. Your task is to produce a report on how to turn your group of student interns into a highly functional team capable of carrying out the internship project.

You will not be offered the internship project until the team building assignment has been completed.

Using the above scenario, your MGT1OBE_MGT2OBE Assessment Task 3 is to complete the team building assignment. Your task is to produce a report how to turn your group of student interns into a highly functional team.

This assignment requires you to do research. Your task is to draw on Organisational Behaviour theory and use it to critically analyse your team and make recommendations to improve its performance with respect to the internship project (see scenario).

You need to:

  • Analyse your team composition
  • Identify three potential issues affecting team performance with respect to the internship project
  • Recommend how you would address each issue

Your report should have the following sections:

  1. Introduction. State the topic of the report, what you will be arguing, and how you have structured the report.
  2. Analyse your team composition. Describe the individual members and their inter-relationships. For instance, consider attributes of individual team members, member diversity, team size, etc. Explain and clarify using concrete examples. Use Organisational Behaviour concepts, theory and frameworks in addressing this section.
  3. Identify three issues likely to affect team performance. Based on your analysis in Section 2, identify three potential team issues (opportunities and problems arising from your team composition) that are likely to impact on team performance. You need to include at least one possible problem or weakness. Explain and clarify using concrete examples. Use Organisational Behaviour concepts, theory and frameworks in addressing this section.
  4. Recommend how you would address each issue. Based on your analysis in Section 3, provide three recommendations. Recommendations are the suggested actions based on your analysis in Section 3. They must be both relevant and feasible. Provide the concrete steps required to address each issue. Use Organisational Behaviour concepts, theory and frameworks in addressing this section.
  5. Conclusion. Summarise key points made in the report.
  6. Reference list. You need to use the APA 6 referencing style.

The current report focused on discussing the aspect of team management. The report has stated that the team members have strengths as well as weaknesses. The strengths include self-awareness, positive mindset and honesty. On the other hand, weaknesses have included inability to communicate, domination over the decision and lack of apathy. The report has stated that concerning these issues, the team can also face a significant number of issues. The report stated that the team could face the issues of ineffective change management, poor perception and inadequate information sharing. The report has suggested that the team needs to monitor and manage the resistance and assess risks. Besides, the team also needs to include daily information sharing and feedback. The team can also attempt to increase the consistency of work. 

1. Introduction 

The present report has aimed at discussing the aspect of team building. In this report, the attributes of building a team have been discussed. The report has stated that team composition with the help of organisational behaviour theories. Besides, the report has also identified issues that can arise while performing as a team. The issues have been represented with effective examples. Furthermore, the report has also attempted to provide recommendations regarding the issues. 

2. Analysis of team composition 

In the current report, the team comprised two members, Gurkeerat Singh and Anas Ahmed Sheikh. Both the team members possess different attributes which can be considered as both strengths and weaknesses of the members. Singh is more self-aware, which makes him able to accept the weaknesses. For example, when a project could not achieve its desired outcome due to Singh's fault, he was able to accept his failure openly.  On the other hand, Sheikh is highly motivated, which helps him to work in adverse situations as well. For example, when the team was compelled to work in a remote location, Sheikh was comfortable even working at that situation. However, Singh faced issues while working in this location. As per the organisational behaviour theory, the concept of individual differences stated that the individual difference in the behaviour of Singh and Sheikh contributed to the working pattern in an adverse situation (Kitchin, 2017). Furthermore, Singh is an honest team member. This makes him more aware of his drawbacks and shortcomings. 

Moreover, Sheikh also has strength while working in a team. Sheikh is a positive person and has a positive outlook on teamwork. Organisational behaviour theory suggests that perception of team members also impacts the performance of a team. As per Becker et al. (2016), the concept of perception of people states that the interpretation of one incident can be different for different employees. Therefore, when a team project failed, both the team members reacted differently. Sheikh was able to overcome the failure more efficiently.  However, there is a lack of apathy from Sheikh. For example, at the planning stage of the project, he did not participate actively in the discussion. As per Bliese, Edwards & Sonnentag (2017), the concept of desire for involvement related to organisational behaviour suggests that all the members of a team attempt to participate in the decision making. However, Sheikh is exceptional in this case. On the other hand, Singh attempts to dominate the decisions. For example, the final decision of the internship project was made by Singh without considering Sheikh. The interrelation of the team members is dependent on the attributes.

In most of the situations, they have a cordial relationship. Both of them collaborate effectively. However, there is a lack of communication in some cases. For example, at different stages of the internship project, Sheikh and Singh made decisions on their own without communicating.  As per Kwan, Zhang, Liu, & Lee (2018), the concept of human dignity states that people need to be treated with dignity. Therefore, the lack of dignity from either end can impact the interrelationship. The team has cultural diversity as both the members are from different religions. The team size is fairly small as the team consisted of two members.

3. Identify three issues likely to affect team performance 

Based on the team composition, it can be stated that the team has a few good qualities. However, there is also the presence of several conflicts that can take place due to the composition of the team. Therefore, the issues for this team can be such as,

Ineffective change management

The team members do not have the same approach to handle a change. Both the person has a different approach to face an alteration in the project. Therefore, the team can be subjected to ineffective change management. For example, when the department for working was changed for the team members, Sheikh was able to focus on work. However, Singh was unable to adjust with the changes. Taylor's theory of scientific management can be considered for this issue. As per Gelfand, Aycan, Erez, & Leung (2017), Taylor's theory states that a scientific process of planning work is needed to be considered to achieve economic efficiency, specialisation, simplification and standardisation. According to the theory, every task needs to be analysed scientifically for effective performance. Therefore, to experience better change management, this team can also apply this policy. 

Lack of Information sharing

Working as a team needs effective information sharing among all the members. However, in the team, there is a lack of communication as decisions are made by individual members. The team is still not accustomed to making collective decisions. For example, at the initial stage of the project, the Sheikh did not contribute to the discussions. This further led to a lack of communication between both the members. In this case, Fayol's principles of management could have been applied. As per Ferdous (2016), the theory of Fayol suggests that as per the principle of Unity for direction, members of an organisation need to work collectively for achieving the goal of the team or the organisation. Application of this theory can be made for ensuring that effective information sharing takes place.

Poor perception of the team

Another significant issue that can arise in future is the poor perception of the team. This can also be the result of a lack of communication. To have a successful project, the efforts of the team need to be perceived correctly. However, in this team, poor cooperation can result in the poor perception of the team. For instance, due to the lack of cooperation between the two team members, the team was criticised by the HR department of the organisation. The theory of role perception in the modern approaches of organisational behaviour is important in this issue. As per Chun, Brockner & De Cremer (2018), this theory states that how a person interrelates and adapts to the work culture of an organisation creates the role perception. Therefore, to be perceived as an effective team, this team needs to engage in the work of the organisation efficiently.

4. Recommendations 

The team can face a significant level of issues in the future. Therefore, it is imperative to take steps that can help in improving the performance of the team. Therefore, to have better performance, this team can undertake steps such as,

Recommendation 1: Monitoring and managing resistance and assessing the risks

To experience effective change management, the team needs to consider monitoring and managing the resistance that can arise as a result of the change. Besides, assessing the risks related to the change is also significant. As per the goal-setting theory, the stage of clarity suggests that an impending change in the working environment needs to be monitored as well as managed effectively (Wood et al. 2016). Therefore, monitoring and managing the resistance of the change can be significantly important to have effective change management. Besides, the risks arising from the changes also needed to be considered for adapting to the change. Therefore, as resistance is a significant part of change management, it needs to be monitored and managed. Further, the risks needed to be anticipated, and the team needs to be prepared for the risk.

Recommendation 2: Daily information update and feedback

The issue of lack of communication is contributing to the problem of ineffective information sharing. Therefore, to increase information sharing, the team members need to provide updates of information daily. As per Lord et al. (2017), the theory of organisational behaviour suggests that information needs to be shared among all the members of a project team. Therefore, the information sharing between Singh and Sheikh can be done based on emails and text messages regularly. In this way, information sharing between the team will be effective. The members also need to seek feedback from one another daily to ensure that information is being shared efficiently. 

Recommendation 3: Including consistency in work

The lack of clear perception about the team is also contributed by the lack of communication between the team members. Therefore, the team members need to include consistency in work to a great extent. As per Kitchin (2017), the concept of perception is substantially important in organisational behaviour as it helps in clarifying the true intention of an organisation. Therefore, to increase consistency both the team members need to increase their consistency with a few steps. The members need to plan and then perform. They also need to assess their performance regularly and need to focus on the feedback of the superiors. 

5. Conclusion 

It can be concluded from the current report that the team in the discussion have two interns working in a large organisation. The report suggests that both the members possess some positive attributes such as honesty, self-awareness and positive attitude. However, they also have negative attributes such as lack of apathy, domination on decisions. The report has stated that as per these attributes, the team can face issues with change management, team perception and information sharing. The report has suggested recommendations for each issue.
